Strands of Unakite Gemstone Beads
Unakite, also termed epidotized granite, is an altered granite-like rock composed of orthoclase feldspar, epidote, and quartz, with the epidote representing diverse alteration or replacement processes. Unakite is characteristically mottled pistachio green and salmon pink in color, the pink component from the feldspar and the green component from the epidote. Unakite occurs as veins, seams, dykes, and lenses enclosed in other granites. Unakite is named after the locality of its discovery, the Unaka Mountains in the Blue Ridge Province of the eastern United States, where it occurs in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Unakite is also reportedly found as glacially transported pebbles and cobbles among Lake Superior beach rocks and are presumably Canadian in origin.
Other occurrences of unakite are known in Brazil, China, South Africa, and Sierra Leone. Some material from these other sources may lack the quartz component of a granite but are also termed unakite in the gem trade by virtue of their feldspar and epidote components and characteristic pink and green color.
Unakite is most commonly presented in jewelry as cabochons, beads and carvings. Unakite is a relatively hard material (6-7 Mhos hardness) with good wear characteristics and resistance to abrasion. Unakite wears well in rings and bracelets and may be employed as a gemstone in all types of jewelry. Unakite does not have specific care requirements, but conservative gemstone precautions should be observed while cleaning and storing unakite for the sake of preserving the original condition of the stone. It is safest to clean unakite using warm water, mild soap and a cloth or soft brush. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner and keep unakite out of contact with excessive heat, acids, ammonia and other chemical or abrasive cleaners.
