Fluorite is calcium fluoride, one of the simple halide minerals consisting of a metal combined with one of the common halogen elements. Fluorite is a member in the isometric crystal system and is common to hydrothermal veins and pegmatites and also occurs as cavity linings in dolomite and limestone. Fluorite is typically associated with calcite, quartz, barite, galena, sphalerite, and other ore minerals. Fluorite occurs world wide, but among the more important fluorite localities are Canada, China, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Hungary, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, Peru, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States.

Fluorite can be so transparent and beautifully colored by trace elements that it is employed as a gemstone in spite of being a soft material (4 Mhos hardness) that is easily cleaved. Clear when free of impurities, fluorite is most commonly violet, green or yellow in color but also occurs in blue, brown, pink, red and black, sometimes with aesthetic multiple color zones and bands within the same crystal. The phenomena of fluorescence was first observed in fluorite and derives its name from it. Ancient Egyptians carved fluorite statues and scarabs, and ancient Romans fashioned decorative vases and vessels from color banded fluorite mined in England.

Fluorite is most commonly presented in jewelry as cabochons, beads and carvings and is even cut as faceted gemstones. However, fluorite's softness and fragility make it most suitable for earrings and necklace stones not subjected to the wear and abuse inevitably suffered in rings and bracelets. Due to its softness fluorite should be stored apart from other gems which will scratch it. Clean fluorite stones using warm water, mild soap and a cloth or soft brush. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner and keep fluorite out of contact with heat, acids, ammonia and other chemical or abrasive cleaners.
