Strands of Dragon's Blood Jasper Gemstone Beads

Jasper is silicon dioxide, a gemstone variety of the tectosilicate mineral quartz in the trigonal crystal system. Jasper is a variety of chalcedony or chert, quartz with a microcrystalline texture so fine that its crystalline nature is too small to see clearly even under strong magnification. The term jasper is generically used to designate opaque varieties of chalcedony containing earthy impurities and in which concentric banding is absent. The hydrothermal action of silica bearing solutions is generally thought to be required in the formation of jasper, which is often associated with other forms of chalcedony in basalts, tuffs and other formations associated with volcanic activity.

Jaspers occur in virtually every color, being influenced by the specific mineral content of the original sediment or volcanic ash that is subsequently invaded and silicified through hydrothermal processes. Ornate patterns sometimes arise during the consolidation process, forming flow and deposition patterns in the original sediment or ash. Jasper can be modified by the diffusion of minerals along discontinuities providing the appearance of vegetative (dendritic) growth. The original materials are often fractured or brecciated after deposition into myriad beautiful patterns which subsequently become filled with other colorful minerals. The ever popular picture jaspers exhibit combinations of patterns such as banding from flow or deposition patterns and color variations resulting in the perception of scenes or images when cut into slabs or cabochons, as in "Biggs", "Deschutes" and "Palomino" jaspers. Diffusion from a center produces distinctive orbicular appearances as in "Flower", "Leopard Skin" or "Poppy" jaspers.

Jasper is most commonly presented in jewelry as cabochons, beads and carvings. The most highly silicified grades of jasper are relatively tough and hard materials (7 Mhos hardness) with good wear characteristics and resistance to abrasion. Jasper wears well in rings and bracelets and is commonly employed as a gemstone in all types of jewelry. Jasper does not have specific care requirements, but conservative gemstone precautions should be observed when cleaning and storing jasper for the sake of preserving the original condition of the stone. It is safest to clean jaspers using warm water, mild soap and a cloth or soft brush. Do not use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner and keep jaspers out of contact with excessive heat, acids, ammonia and other chemical or abrasive cleaners.
